The “Battery + Charger for Pentax Digital SLR K20D, Konica Minolta NP-400″ is a nice compact wall charger and battery set (see photo). The wall charger has a built in folding AC plug (see photo) so you don’t have to carry a power cord. The flip side to the folding plug is that it also limits the wall chargers usability around congested AC power strips.

The charger is rated for a nice variety of AC and DC voltages, 100-240 VAC (see photo) and 12-24 VDC (see photo). This makes the charger a very valuable resource when travelling overseas.

The design of this charger has a smaller securing tab (see photo) to latch the battery in place then what’s found on the AC only Pentax K20D charger (see photo). With the charger I was shipped, the NP-400 battery slips out of the charge a little too easily for my liking. Hence the battery tends to dislodging from the charger when knocked ajar in a vehicle.

The supplied NP-400 battery (see photo) charged in about 2. 5 hours. The wall charger is designed with a “dual color” charging status LED (see photo). The LED is red when charging and changes to green when finished. As of this writing, the label on the supplied NP-400 battery (see photo) is without an Amp Hour rating so I’m not sure what to expect in terms of battery performance. I will share my findings as I get to exercise the battery though a few charge and discharge cycles with the camera.

In conclusion, I find this wall charger to be much more versatile then the charger and cord that is supplied with the Pentax K20D camera. This charger, with 12-24 VDC cord, takes up no more space in my camera bag than did the Pentax charger. The weight of this charger is about the same as the Pentax unit. Presuming consistant manufacturing quality and long life, I recommend this product.
