I hope this lens will be good, but my first copy I ordered from Amazon had an unbelievable front-focus problem. Honestly, in all lenses I ever tested I have never seen it to this extreme. It exceeds the DOF at f2. 8 thus your focus point isn’t even remotely in focus.
Again, I am sure (hope) that this is a good lens, but quality control especially at this price point should be better.

This is a superb lens — and I mean truly superb. It is the IQ equivalent of the Nikon 24-70 2. 8 lens, and I don’t say that lightly. The IQ between shots taken with this lens and with the Nikon version are indistinguishable, even by pixel peepers, and at half the price.

It has won countless awards already in the half year it has been available for Nikon (it was available for Canon first), including a recent European product award for best lens of the year.

Highly recommended. It balances beautifully on a D700 body, and it is super silent, fast focusing, and just a joy to use. Beware! The Filter size in 82 — get a good UV filter for lens protection — this is a big lens.

Despite the diameter, it is half as large as the Nikon equivalent — and though it weighs almost the same, the balance on the D700 or D300 is better so it feels like it is also half the weight.

Just an all-around great pro-quality lens.

BUT — there is one caveat — like other Sigma lenses (though they are getting better) there is sample variation. My first lens didn’t focus properly and needed to be exchanged. The second one was pitch-perfect.

I have always shot portraits with the Canon 50mm 1. 4 on a crop body like the 10d then 40d. I also shoot a fair bit more with my beloved 70-200 2. 8 IS now I have a 5DM2 and it isn’t 1. 6ified. I am doing more weddings and needed a shorter zoom. I have used the Canon in this range but always thought it was a bit big and expensive. I can get over those objections easily enough because of the images but when it came time to buy I saw this lens had just arrived on the market.

Long story short this is a great lens that I have now worries with using mixed in with my other sharp Canon lenses. It is sharp and focuses fast and quietly. It is solid but not too big and has a nice finish I prefer over the Canon’s slicker white L paint.

So far so good on the Sigma 24-77mm lens. I have taken about 500 pics over the past week just testing it out. I have not noticed any perspective distortion, barrel distortion, or vignetting at 24mm & f/2. 8 but have not tested it at all ranges. I think the focus time is just a little slow but at half the price for this lens versus the Nikon lens, this is a great buy for a great lens. I did notice that the AF/M switch is very easy to accidentally move it to manual. This happened to me when I took it out of the backpack. But, now I check it and hopefuly it was just a one time thing.

Had it for about 6 weeks. Fantastic lens with sharp corner and amazing anti-flare capability. Like its build, compactness and color very much. F2. 8 delivers great images, so I always use its maxi aperture for portraits. The only drawback is the 82mm filter size, but I guess it will be the trend for many other pro zoom lenses later. Canon 16-35II is an example.
